App Custom Icon

I apologize; I forgot to post another blog. Whoops! Oh well, here’s how to customize an app icon.

This is on iPhone OS 3.1.2 (7D11), and the steps should be similar on other fimwares, but folder names may not be the same, and some of these will possibly not work at all. Hope they do, and good luck!

1. Download iFile. You do have to be jailbroken, and this can be found in Cydia. There are two options, you can either pay for it, or (I do not recommend doing this, but I have to put the option out there) add the source http://sinfuliphonerepo.com/, and download the cracked version. I believe that you can also use iPhoneBrowser, which you can easily find downloads for if you Google it. There may or may not be a Mac, or Linux, or Unix version for it, comment if you find them.
2. Make/find the app icon. If you want to take the icon and edit it, you can add it to your photo library by going to two different places depending on the type of app. App Store apps, go to /var/mobile/Applications, then go to the app, then go to the folder (the app’s name).app, and find icon.png or Icon.png. For non-App Store apps, go to /var/stash/Applications.(Something) or just Applications. Press the blue arrow on the right, go to the bottom, and hit add to camera roll. From there, you can edit it using Photoshop Mobile, or send it to yourself in an email, and edit it on the computer. If you edit it on Photoshop Mobile, the corners of apps that normally have rounded corners will be white. I will explain how to fix that in a minute. If you do it on your computer, it will be too large and not look right on your iDevice. These can both be fixed easily. Go to Quirco.com, and on the top go to iPhone icon maker. You must do this on your computer. Click browse and find the file with your app icon. You can choose to add the reflection on some iPhone app icons. Then click make icon. The icon will show up on an iPhone, and to the left of that with several different backgrounds. On the part with black to white backgrounds, right click on one and save it. Then email it to yourself and get it on your iDevice. Press and hold it, and save it.
3. Go to iFile and go to /var/mobile/media/DCIM/(folder closest to the bottom with some number than APPLE) and go to the bottom to get the image. Hit edit in the top right, check the image you want to be the icon, then hit the bottom right icon and press copy/link. Then take the previously mentioned steps of how to find the icon. Press edit, then the bottom right button, then paste. Rename icon.png or Icon.png to something else, then take your pasted IMG(number).png and rename it either icon.png or Icon.png, whichever was originally the icon name. It IS case sensitive.
4. You now have a custom icon- respring or reboot to see the results.

Here’s the icon I use for my app store icon- if you don’t want to go through the trouble of making, or editing an icon to test this with, just use this.

Oh, and it doesn't matter if an image is not png, just rename it to say it is. I have used jpgs, and it seems like as long as an iphone can decode the image type, you can use it.
